Brave Kid, Aayden Tristram

Aayden Tristram, photo right, wore a special “Brave Kid” cape for a recent surgical procedure at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.  Not wanting to be left out of the fun, his dad Dillon wore a matching “Brave Kid” cape as well.  Thanks to the special cape, Aayden was able to return to his Superhero duties later that same day.  The team in the Ambulatory Surgical Center at AMC provides pediatric patients with a lunch box that contains a cape, “Brave Kid” membership card, stickers, crayons and coloring pictures to make the experience a little less daunting for the young patients.

Eight-year-old Benjamin Clark is accustomed to catching baseballs, but more recently caught a stuffed animal while being cared for in the surgical unit at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.  An anonymous donation was given to the AMC Gift Shop for the purchase of stuffed animals to help comfort children at the medical center.

David Narreau, of Plattsburgh, was at Adirondack Medical Center for a surgical procedure on his birthday, but that did not stop staff in the Ambulatory Surgical Unit from celebrating his special day.  Following his procedure, the staff sang “Happy Birthday” to David and gave him a blueberry muffin and a card.

Gifts to Honor Outstanding Care

Among those who care for you or a loved one while a patient or resident of Adirondack Health, there may have been a particular person or specialty care team that really made a difference.

A gift to the Foundation will be directed to their program or unit and Foundation staff will inform the honoree of your gift, although we will not specify the amount.  Your gift will be used to enhance patient care or provide continuing education for caregivers.  You will receive an acknowledgement of your gift for tax purposes, and your gift will be recognized in the Annual Report.

The Angel of Hope at AMC is one of over 120 nationwide, and at each Angel of Hope there is an annual memorial ceremony in honor of children who have passed away.

Memorial gifts are a meaningful way to remember a loved one or friend. A charitable contribution in the name of someone who has passed away can have special meaning to both the family and the donor. You may designate your gift to a department or in honor of a special caregiver. Your gift will make an important difference in the lifesaving work at Adirondack Health.

In acknowledgement of your gift, a note is sent to the family of the person you wish to memorialize - informing them of the gift and the identity of the donor. The amount of the gift will remain confidential. You will receive an acknowledgement of your gift for tax purposes, and your gift will be recognized in the Annual Report.

Patient Care Director Linda McClarigan, left, and Dr. Elizabeth Buck, right, presented the 2012 Meghan E. Handler Excellence in Nursing award to Lisa Frechette, a registered nurse on the Medical Floor at Adirondack Medical Center.  The Meghan E. Did one particular staff member, physician or department make your stay with us exceptional?  If you would like to make a gift that will benefit a particular individual’s department or program, please let us know by making the request on the memo section of your check or noting your wish on the on-line form.  Donor restricted gifts are temporarily restricted until the Department Director uses them to enhance patient care or provide continuing education for caregivers.  Foundation Staff will inform the Department Director or Physician of your gift. You will receive an acknowledgement of your gift for tax purposes, and your gift will be recognized in the Annual Report.

Bequests & Planned Giving

A bequest in your will or a planned gift from your estate provides an opportunity to leave a legacy of your commitment to the health of our region. Gifts made as part of your estate plan allow Adirondack Health to improve health and save lives far into the future. Unless otherwise specified by the donor, a planned gift will be added to Foundation investments and the interest it earns will be directed to annual programmatic support. In this manner, planned gifts continue to grow and support healthcare in the Adirondacks year after year.

Bequest: A bequest in your will may be unrestricted (to be used where the need is greatest) or donor restricted (given to a particular program or department). Bequests may be funded through a gift of cash, real estate, securities, life insurance or other property. If you intend to specify a purpose for your bequest, we ask that you contact the Foundation office and speak to the executive director to discuss your wishes at 518-897-2348.

Sample language for a bequest: "I hereby give the sum of $________ to the Adirondack Medical Center Foundation d.b.a. Adirondack Health Foundation, P.O. Box 120 Saranac Lake, NY 12983 EIN 16-1528554."

Charitable Distribution from an IRA

An individual age 70.5 or older may give a direct charitable gift from an individual retirement account (IRA), including required minimum distributions, of up to $100,000 to a qualified non-profit (other than donor advised funds and supporting organizations) and not have to report the IRA distribution as taxable income on his/her federal income tax return. There is no charitable deduction for the IRA distribution. However, the donor will not pay tax on otherwise taxable income which is the equivalent of a charitable deduction.

IMPORTANT: The Adirondack Health Foundation is a supporting organization, so a donor who wishes to contribute to the annual fund using a distribution from an IRA will be asked to make the gift directly to Adirondack Medical Center. Please have the distribution check made out to "Adirondack Medical Center" and mailed to:

Adirondack Health Foundation
P.O. Box 120
Saranac Lake, NY 12983

If you are using the IRA distribution as a campaign pledge payment there are additional instructions, so please contact the Foundation office by calling 518-897-2370.
