COVID Testing FAQs

What type of test do you perform?

Adirondack Health's COVID testing clinic exclusively performs PCR tests.

A PCR (molecular) test detects genetic material from the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction, or PCR. A sample is collected by inserting a long nasal swab into your nostril and obtaining a test specimen from the back of your nose.

Adirondack Health's COVID testing clinic is not currently administering antigen (or "rapid") tests.

How quickly can I get my results?

We run all of our COVID tests on site at Adirondack Medical Center. Test results are typically available within 48 hours.

How much will the test cost without insurance or without a testing order?

$80

How far in advance can I make a testing appointment?

You can make an appointment with our COVID testing clinic up to one week in advance. Same-day testing appointments are available, but you must pre-register before arriving at the COVID testing clinic.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m./12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m./12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A nurse will swab your sinuses through your nose for your COVID-19 test.  

Adirondack Health will bill the health insurance plans of individuals with specific testing orders from medical providers. Patients will be responsible for the cost of any test performed without a specific order, as well as any associated co-pays and/or deductibles, which are determined by health insurance companies and plans.

Accessing results

Through the Adirondack Health pre-registration process, you are set up with the HIXNY (Health Information Exchange of New York State) patient portal.

Typically, patient results are available on the portal within 48 hours of testing.

·        If you are a new user, you will receive an email with further instructions after registering. The passcode is adirondack (all lower case).  We recommend you enroll in the portal as soon as you receive this email, so you are prepared to check for results.

·        If you did not receive an email after registering, that is because you already have an account set up with the HIXNY patient portal. You can access your portal by navigating to our medical records page, then scrolling to the link: B. (HIXNY Patient Portal).

If you have any issues accessing your portal, there are username and password reset options (below the sign-in area) and additional troubleshooting information accessible by clicking on the question mark located in the upper right corner of the page. You can also contact HIXNY support directly at: support@hixny.org or by calling them at518-640-0021, ext. 2.

Please note: If your test was ordered by a doctor outside the Adirondack Health system, your result will also be communicated to you by that doctor’s office.

Parents of minors (under 18 years old), individuals residing outside of New York state, and those traveling internationally will receive their results via secure email to the email address provided at the point of registration, once available.

Some patients will be called directly by Adirondack Health to discuss test results.
